Ryan stepped into his quarters. Clearly, he'd been working too long of hours again. He had a half done charcoal drawing, hanging haphazardly off an easel, and open old styled paper journal laid open on the coffee table, as well as a plate of crumbs from the last meal he'd actually eaten here. Well, it was just now dinner time, so Ryan made an effort to get things picked up so he could relax. The first thing was to get the plates back on the replicator so they could get recycled. While he was there, he grabbed himself a ginger ale. With the ginger ale in hand, he wandered into his bedroom, changed into flannel pants and a baggy t-shirt, then grabbed Dr sexy alligator out of the top of his closet.
"Hey bud, you want to listen to some music?" With nobody around, he could talk to inanimate stuffed objects if he felt like it. Wandering back out to the living room, he clipped the paper more securely to the easel, but left the drawing to finish later. With a plop, he landed on the couch, with the stuffed alligator across his lap, and turned on a Betazed punk band.
Grol had finished his duties and had made a report about the power surge. He ventured to guess that doctor Ryan had been pissed off when the CO had ordered Soral's release just mere hours after surgery. He had to admit he'd been a little pissed off. He was all about duty but if the XO got reinjured the poor doctor would have to clean it up. He sighed as he got off the turbo lift and headed to the doctor's quarters. He was hoping to distract him a little by helping him get organized. Organization made him always feel better.
"Computer, lower volume." Then Ryan called out "Enter." Wondering who it could be. He had a brief hope that it was Echo, but she'd made it very clear that it was very casual. "Petty Officer Grol." Ryan stood up, dropping the alligator to the couch. "Come on in, what can I do for you?" He asked.
"I have come to help you organize." His gaze filtered to the alligator. "Nice Alligator"
Ryan blushed. "Ummm thanks." The alligator had already been seen, so there was no use hiding him now. "That's great. Thank you. Can I get you something from the replicator?" Ryan asked, heading that way.
To refuse would be rude. "A water Please." He looked back at the alligator. "Do not be self conscious. I used to have a large lion."
Ryan grabbed two waters, returning to offer Tilian one. "He was a gift from my sister." He explained, as if that made having him out in the living room any less embarrassing. "Ok, so organizing." Ryan was glad he'd picked up. He grabbed his main PaDD, where he kept the bulk of his paperwork.
"Alright Tell me about what currently troubles you with everything. We shall start with that."
"Ok." That Ryan could do. He pulled out what he had ready for the next report. He really should have been working on it rather than laying around listening to music, but he was trying to get a better balance. He handed the PaDD to Tilian.
Tillian studied it. "Excellent. Now questions. How do you tend to work? Do you organize you reports by day or severity or just randomly deal with it when it piles up?"
"Just as they pile up." Ryan admitted. "I know I need a system, I just don't know where to start, it's not like studying or organizing medical notes." That he could do.
"I see." He paused. "Do you think that it would be easier if we categorized the items into three piles Urgent, important and Can Wait?"
"Ok. Anything is better than no system. I miss having a yeoman." He commented. Then seemed to realize how that could be interpreted. "I don't expect you to fill the role. I do appreciate the help getting started, but I will figure it out."
"Indeed. I have confidence that you will but I have spoken with the CO and XO and they are happy to share. I like to be kept busy."
"I understand. Don't forget to take time for yourself as well. What do you like to do to relax?" Ryan asked.
Grol thought a moment. "I like to read. I like to organize and cook. I also clean."
Ryan smiled. Well the man had the perfect job for himself. Together they worked out a system. Ryan had to stop Tilian a lot to ask for clarification. "Can I be fired now?" He more or less teased. The resignation letter was still sitting on a secure PaDD, but he'd taken Jack's advice, and hadn't looked at it since writing it. Right now he was simply poking fun at himself for his complete inability to handle paperwork efficiently.
Trilian raised an eyebrow. "Why fired?"
Ryan just chuckled. "I'm kidding. You've actually been a big help. I think I have something I can work with now. What do you think?"
"I believe so. As I said I am happy to help. If things get overwhelming or backlogged I can help." He paused. "Doctor may I ask a medical question?"
"Of course." Ryan immediately replied, giving Tiilian his full attention.
"Do you have experience with Veterinary medicine?"
"With horses and dogs. And once with a very grumpy cat, but nothing extensive." Ryan replied. "But how can I help?"
"I have just done one of a the most spur of the moment things I have ever done. Before we left the station I purchased a cat. I would require someone to examine her."
Ryan smiled. "Sure I'll be happy to come give ..her? him? a checkup"
"Her. Luna. I cannot understand why but I found myself in a pet store and next thing I know I have a pet."
Ryan chuckled. "It happens. I had a puppy literally follow me home. She was a great dog. Sometimes they pick us, and there's not much you can do about it. Do you want me to come over now?"
He looked around. He was taken a little off guard. "If it's no trouble. Also if you like I can help you organize your quarters."
"It's no trouble at all." Then Ryan followed his gaze around. He hid a grin poorly, then in a mock offended tone said. "What's wrong with my quarters?" He was already reaching for his med kit.
"Nothing but organizing for efficiency might save time."
"I'm sure it would, but I get enough of that from work. I like coming home to just a little bit of mess." Plus, he could. He was pretty neat actually, and normally got to picking everything up before bed. "So, tell me about your cat." He smiled.
"She's very small." He said as they headed out. "She was the smallest of the group. I still give her milk from a bottle but she is spirited. Beautiful green eyes."
"She sounds adorable." Ryan followed Tilian to his quarters. When he stepped inside, he suddenly felt like he needed to offer to take off his boots. The man's quarters were immaculate.
As if in response Grol removed his shoes and put them in a basket by the door. He also pulled out some slippers and handed it to the doctor. "Sorry...I do not have many people over they are brand new though, Being a germ averse person I ... am a bit extreme, or so have been told."
He headed to the little corner in the living area and soon came back with a gently mewing kitten, her eyes emerald green and her fur black as night. "This is Luna."
While Tilian went to get the kitten, Ryan removed his boots, and placed them in the basket, then put on the slippers over his socks, hoping Tilian hadn't had a chance to see he was wearing spiderman socks. "She's adorable." Ryan took the kitten. "I'd say she's just about ready to be weaned. Have you tried some wet cat food, further moistened with some meat broth."
"No. Will you show me the mix?"
Ryan nodded. weighed the kitten in his hand. "What feline milk mix have you been using?"
"I have been using replicator mix 137. She seems to like that one. I have also supplied her with heavy cream." He walked over and replicated the milk mix. He also brought over some wet cat food and chicken broth. Sitting down he watched Ryan work.
Ryan took what Tilian had been using, and mixed it with wet cat food and chicken broth. He dipped his finger in and offered it to the kitten, keeping a hand on her tiny belly to make sure she didn't over eat.
"You and Commander Soral are making it very tempting to get a pet." He commented with a smile.
Tilian watched. "Why have you not thus far?"
"That's a very good question. There's nothing stopping me now. My wife didn't like animals in the house, and we never discussed them." Ryan continued to dip his finger in the food mix, and offer it to Luna. His hands were also checking muscle tone, skin elasticity and fur.
"I have never considered a pet but she had proven to calm my anxiety. She is also a companion when I journal."
Ryan smiled. Luna's little belly had filled out. He washed his hands, then took a small damp cloth and wiped the kittens face. Then he made sure to have everything recycled so he didn't leave Tilian's quarters a mess. "Well then I'd say she's just what the doctor ordered. I think you made a good choice with your life style as well. Cats are very fastidious, and more independent than say a dog. She's in good health. My guess is she will be fully weaned within the week. I put the mix in the replicator for you under Luna1"
Tilian studied the doctor. He decided he liked him. He was handsome for sure. In a sense the Gods or whatever beings created the universe were conspiring putting him a ship with so many good looking people. "You are not like most doctors. You have a very good beside manner." He gestured towards Luna. "Thank you for your help with her."
After the doc had left Tilian did his usual quick clean up and then settled in for the night. It had been a good day.
