A Goodbye

Mission: Operation: Neu Reich
Scarlet wandered into the medical bay. She'd been given a ticklist of places to go and people to see when she first boarded. Right now, she was finally seeing the medical bay properly. She knew she was here for a physical but she also knew Ryan was a stickler for rules when it came to patients.
Scarlet saw Ryan and smiled, blushing. The events of the morning, clouding her mind a little. "Hi," she waved from his office's open doorway. "I'm here for a grand tour, maybe install a few upgrades, meet your EMH and if there's time, I apparently need a physical," she listed off from her PaDD.
"Of course." He waved her in. "Well, this is my office. If you ever can't find me, chances are I'm here."
"So, where I'll inevitably bring you lunch when you forget it," she teased.
Ryan then led her out to view the rest of sickbay. "I know she's small, but she's capable." He spoke proudly of his little corner of the ship.
"It's perfect and just what I need," Scarlet replied, "we do need to discuss how to work together without 'us' being a conflict. I'm ure you'll end up loving me for the potentential upgrade potential though." She looked to a biobed, "are you alright to grab the EMH, I just need to see what version you're on here and upgrade him if needed. Engineering said something about a 404 styled error."
The Standing Bear's computer came to life, responding crisply. "Emergency Medical Hologram file not found. Please restate your inquiry." It was then that Emerick's recorded messages were being dispatched to the personal PaDDs of several individuals, including Ryan's.
Ryan's PaDD beeped at him, and he grabbed it from his pocket. "Can you see what's up with Emerick? The EMH." Ryan amended, turning his attention to Scarlet for a moment, before looking at his PaDD.
"I'm going to try," she held up a chip, "if not a have 'Barney'. You can borrow him until I can fix Emmerick. He's far from perfect, he's a prototype." Scarlet always found it entertaining, hearing what people called their EMH's. She smiled and opened up a nearby consol trying to pinpoint the files, "do you know if the med bay received any direct damage? An EMH may self destruct in the instance of compromise. The data they hold is private."
But Ryan wasn't paying attention, his eyes glued to the PaDD in his hand.
"Ryan?" Scarlet looked over to him, just in case she'd missed him leave. His PaDD did go off a moment ago and, knowing her, she was probably talking to herself. On seeing him engrossed, she asked, "Doctor Rose, is everything alright?"
Ryan blinked up at her, clearly in a state of mild shock. He shook his head 'no'. "Is there any way to get him back?" He had to hold on to the thread of hope, as slim as it was. His mind was still reeling from Emerick's good bye message.
Scarlet looked back to the console, "I mean, maybe. I can't guarantee, and even if I could bring him back, it may very well be a rollback. So he may be an earlier version on himself." She looked back to Ryan, "why? What's going on?"
"He deleted himself." Ryan held up the PaDD. "He wrote a fucking good bye note." He very uncharacteristically cursed, threw the PaDD across the bay, then fled to his office.
Scarlet flinched and quickly looked to the PaDD then to Ryan going to his office. She didn't know what to say or do. To her it was just a programme, but she knew what it was like to get attached to something so human.
Thinking a moment, Scarlet walked over to the disgarded PaDD and looked it over. Apparently Emerick had become more human than expected, in fact, he'd become a fellow member of staff. She placed the PaDD onto the side and got to work on downloading all logs and data that remained on what had happened. Maybe she'd be able to piece something together.
Once downloaded, she put in her chip, uploading a new, temporary EMH. "Barney, can you come online?" she asked.
"Hello, mother," a large man appeared, Scarlet had modelled him after Patch Adams. She smiled, it was an inside joke with her team. Everyone that had worked on him had family names like 'uncle Steve' and 'daddy'. The woman gave him a quick run down, then requested a physical.
After the physical, she deactivated him and walked over to Ryan's office. She stepped in silently and placed his PaDD on the desk, softly so as not to disturb him. She went to leave without saying a word, she'd worked with doctors long enough to know when to just get on with a job.
Ryan looked up from the couch, red eyed. "I'm sorry."
Scarlet looked back from the door, "we don't really see what an EMH becomes after it leaves our computers. It's nice to know that we make them so human that they leave a mark." She paused, "I've installed a temporary replacement, just incase you need it. Can I do anything else? Professionally or personally?"
Ryan stood up and walked over, then pulled her close. He just hugged her, making no moves to take it further than that. "You are helping just being here. It just came as a shock."
Scarlet wrapped her arms around him and just held him, "it's OK. I'll do what I can, ok? I promise."
