Ryan had to read the message twice. He wasn’t one to gossip, but he wasn’t deaf or ignorant. He knew Victrix had offended quite a few people. He was pleased that Soral was putting it behind him, or at least making it appear so to the department heads. It was the best thing for crew moral. Victrix had offended him as well, but Ryan had seen much worse things done under the influence of alcohol than a borderline xenophobic joke and a rather embarrassing prank. He could forgive the CO.

His department was tiny, getting two nurses and a technician to sign a card wouldn’t be a problem. A gift idea was an entirely different matter. Ryan didn’t know Victrix personally, he barely knew her professionally, so the gift would have to be rather generic. He ran through a few ideas, coffee, tea, flowers, but all those required nothing more than a quick trip to the replicator.
Once he decided that it needed to be hand crafted, it was easy.

He did have to replicate the canvas, and the oil pastels, but the work would be his own. He pulled up a schematic for the USS Fontana as a reference, then got to work. Another schematic of the nebula they’d recently encountered gave him a reference for the background.

When he was done, Ryan sat back and checked his work. He hoped he’d hit the proper balance between ‘stylized traveling through nebula’ and an accurate representation of the ship. He decided it was good enough, though he was never truly satisfied with his work. He boxed it up, checked the time, and decided he could spend another hour on paperwork before calling it a night.
