Eyelaya hated doctors, real doctors. She preferred EMHs. They reminded her of the engines that she spoke to daily. It took her a while to arrive in sickbay, the new sickbay. They weren't boarding yet but she could see the work progressing here. "Computer ... activate EMH." She walked around the sickbay while the computer processed her request. She hoped that the EMH was fully functional.

With a slight flicker, the Fontana's emergency medical hologram materialized. His matrix stabilized in a few flickers...still some kinks to figure out, but at least all his limbs were there. "Please sta.." he stopped mid sentence realizing that he had materialized facing a bulkhead. "I'm a Doctor, not a contractor" he said before turning himself around. When he did he quickly spotted a woman. "Oh there you are" he said to her. "What is the nature of your medical emergency?" he asked in a very crisp voice.

She smiled broadly. "Hello! I'm Eyelaya. It's lovely to meet you!" She grabbed his hand and shook it. "No emergency I need an onboarding medical and I'm...more comfortable with you."

The emergency medical hologram glared at the woman, crossing his arms judgmentally. His programming recognized the rank insignia. "Chief, I need not remind you that the 'e' in E.M.H. stands for emergency" he replied swiftly. "I understand that the starship is not entirely operational yet, but Doctor Rose is aboard" added Emerick.

He shook his head and retrieved a tricorder anyways. "High unusual request to have an EMH perform you're onboarding medical. Comfortable you said?" recalling her explanation. "What are you, Chief? Agoraphobic?" Anthropophobic?" he inquired.

She shook her head. "No. Just don't like doctors and on my last posting my best friend was Doctor Ellingham, our EMH."

"What happened...jab you with a hypo as a child and didn't give you a sucker?" he replied dead panning the response. He looked at her apologetically. "I'm sorry. They put too many personalities in this program. Sometimes that one just comes out of the gate running."

"That's okay. I spent a year on Vulcan in a hospital," she said honestly. "Lots of treatment and reconstructive surgery." She absently rubbed the scars by her hairline. "I can go to the CMO if you wish."

The EMH of course noticed the scars. "No no. You're here already and I'm activated. May as well see to it myself" he replied. "Now, tell me more about these reconstructive surgeries of yours...and those scars? Are they because of the surgeries?"

She gave a nod. "There was a breach on one of the ships at the spaceport. I was right there. I'm half Cardassian and half Bajoran. The Vulcan doctors told me that they had to..remove my neck ridges and face ones...It was not easy so I have some scars." She shrugged. "Spent a year at the hospital I think it was about...25 surgeries over the year. I have a few on my back too but hey!" She said, "I'm alive and here and that's what counts. And I got to make a new friend." She said pointing to the EMH.

"I see" he said studying her neck and head. "Hmm" he added assessing the situation. "Hardly the finest surgical work I've seen, but I have most certainly seen worse. Even with extensive dermal regeneration treatment, you'd be left with scarring. I imagine they did a few sessions of it to heal you up as well as they did."

"They did the best they could." She paused. "So what's your name doctor?"

He was taken aback. He had one, yes, but rarely was he asked for it. "Uh Emerick...I picked it myself. Most EMHs have been taking names with E and I thought this one was unique enough. What about you? You said your names was Eyelaya? Does that take after Bajoran naming conventions or Cardassian?"

"What a beautiful name. It sounds so regal. I love it." She smiled, "Well neither really. I had a name at the Bajoran orphanage but when they took me to the Betazed one and when I was adopted out I was given Eyelaya...my adoptive parents didn't want me to take their last name so I just had Eyelaya. It was actually given to me by the adoption official. They said the adopting couple wanted something more Betazed sounding."

Emerick was intrigued. He would go a out taking the medical tricorder and taking the necessary scans. "Peculiar circumstances, but I can relate. I'm a hologram, I'm programmed certain ways and if there's anything that is unwanted or deemed obsolete then it is removed from my program or there is an adjustment made" explained the EMH. "Do you remember any of your name or life before being adopted?"

"That's horrible. You should just be allowed to be who you are. Removing a part of your program! Well now you have me. I will do my best to make sure they don't do that to you. There is nothing saying that you can't learn new things and retain all. After all like any person you develop and grow and if something is obsolete or there is a better way you don't use it you learn the new way and use it." She put a hand on his arm. "I'm sorry they did that to you Emerick." She thought back. "As to your question, not a lot but I have bits and pieces of memory."

Emerick appreciated the apology, but she had nothing to apologize for. "You cannot change what has been done and what was done had to be for the safety of the Federation" he replied. "I can still learn things if necessary, my program is highly adaptable compared to older models; however, aspects of my original and expanded programming have been made dormant. Fear makes flesh and blood life forms make decisions. Some of those decisions ultimately altered me as their way of life was altered in the synth attack on Mars."

"It's still not right." She smiled at the doctor. "So... tell me about your hobbies." She found it much easier to speak with the EMH then she would other crew members. In her eyes he was more real to her.

He continued his work, moving the tricorder and detachable probe around her anatomy. Multitasking was something he was very good at. "Hobbies?" he replied looking a bit perplexed. "I may have had some in the past, but I cannot recall them...probably something that got wiped clean after the Fontana reached the fleetyards for its refitting. I know that we did not always have holo emitters in several areas of the starship. The emergency medical hologram program used to be confined to Sickbay only, unable to move about. I am truly programmed to assist, not so much to acquire hobbies."

"Well, then we'll find you new ones. Starting over can be fun. As for the holo emitters, I understand it's been broadened." She smiled. "It'll be fun. I can help you find hobbies."

He nodded. "Bridge, Main Engineering, Mess Hall, Cargo and shuttlebays, and of course the Holodeck" he explained the expansion. "Crucial areas of the starship that tend to have the most injuries. Hobbies were not really the intention of the expansion. It was to provide quick and crucial medical care in the event of an emergency, especially with such a small crew complement and only a slither of that medical personnel."

"Oh...okay." She said. "Well if you ever want help." She smiled.

"I will know exactly who to call upon" he replied. He closed the tricorder up and looked again at the scars. "If you ever want to have a go at seeing if we can try to repair those scar, modern technology may do you more justice than what you had to work with back then."

She touched one of the scars. If she were honest they were as big a defense mechanism as a hindrance, "You think it can be done?"

"I've read Doctor Rose's file and he is an exceptionally gifted surgeon" replied Emerick. "I think an effort could be made, you'll probably always have some scars from the whole ordeal; however, an effort with modern techniques and technology may yield improved results. I would love to get my hand on some Borg nanoprobes, but with the synthetic ban and all...not the easiest nor most legal thing to come by. Likewise, bio-mimetic gel could be worth looking into. If not anything else then a good swipe with a modern dermal regenerator in the hands of a class act surgeon might be enough improvement."

"Wow, I'll... think on it then. Would you help doctor Rose?"

"Doctor Rose has surgical expertise, but I'm programmed with the knowledge of over a dozen Federation physicians, medical researchers, and scientists" replied the EMH. "Additionally, they have added some non-Federation medical knowledge to my programming. I would be a good asset to have if a procedure were to take place."

"I'd feel better having you there." She sighed.

"I'll be there if he needs me, but you can certainly request my presence. Doctor Rose seems to really appreciate me" he said with genuine delight. "The Chief Engineer on the other hand still seems to view me as equipment" he added.

Eyelaya looked horrified. A chief engineer that saw an EMH as equipment? "That's horrible! Next thing you'll tell me is she thinks a ship is just equipment! Honestly!" she looked at the EMH. "Well if she gives you trouble call me. She out ranks me but I can keep you safe. My best friend on my previous posting they tried to deactivate him when the new CMO came in but I was able to transfer him to a cube matrix and when they needed him well they changed their attitude towards him." She thought a moment. "If you need me you call me, okay." She placed a gentle hand on Emerick's shoulder.

Emerick nodded "If I need you for anything, I will be sure to call upon you" he commented, agreeing with her terms and conditions. "I do not believe that Doctor Rose would treat me as equipment. He has seemed to understand me on a level that most do not, present company excluded" added the EMH. "Well, your health looks to be all in the green for a basic onboarding" he stated.

She smiled, "Great!" She stood on tip toes and kissed his cheek. "Thanks Emerick." She waved and headed towards the door.

"Computer, deactivate the EMH" he said as he reached upward and touched his cheek. His hand touching where she had kissed him.
