Sorry and Proper Introductions

Mission:
Operation: Neu Reich
Location: USS Standing Bear | XO's Office
Timeline: 2394 MD 07
ON:
The next day, Scarlet Rogers had a meeting with the XO. She was a little nervous, she kind of thought it may be a bit awkward. Honestly though, she had seen how sorry Soral had looked and she really was prepared to move passed it and practically had within minutes.
The woman hesitated at his office door, but soon sounded the chime and waited patiently.
Soral's office had been rebuilt. He was now sitting at his desk going through his reports and meetings. He looked up having been lost in an Engineering report. "Enter." He called.
Scarlet stepped in chirping timidly, "Morning, sir.' She sat down politely in front of him and placed her PaDD neatly on her lap.
"Right...Lieutenant Rogers. I must begin by apologizing for yesterday. I honestly mistook you for Alexandra."
Scarlet shook her head, "it's fine, really. I promise. I'm not offended. These things happen. I also know that our hair colour is a rarity on Earth, so, yes... Honestly, it's fine."
"I should have known. She does not usually straighten her hair. She often talks about it but never does it. I thought she had straightened it finally. No offense was meant." He motioned to the replicator. "Would you like something before we start?"
"I'm afraid that I straighten mine as much as I can, but on lazy days, my hair looks like hers but on steroids," Scarlet replied before answering, "I'm fine thank you. I feel like I have tea coming out of my ears with the hospitality that is shown by heads of departments."
He gave a nod and sat back down. "Indeed. Alright Lieutenant. Tell me a little about your research."
Scarlet smiled, "so we're looking at a solution for medical bays becoming outdated the minute they leave a station on a mission, though I suppose it could be applied to any department. Technology is consistently changing, so ship that are away from a station for elongated periods of time will be using outdated, and sometimes unpatched and glitchy systems. If you're within range of a station, that's great, you can have some fixes and upgrades done remotely, but sometimes, it's not so easy. I'm looking at bridging that gap, potentially with some self upgrading software. A software that actively learns and builds upon it. Once a ship then returns to base, these amends can be used for research, or be fixed properly." She paused, "all hypothetical at this point but Borg technology and a few similar cyborg hybrid or reliant races have managed something similar. I believe that if applied correctly, we may stand a chance at remaining in the know."
"Indeed. Fascinating research but I can see how it can...pose some ethical issues down the line, at least questions about AI that grows and learns. Given what happened on Mars...well. It will be a challenge but I look forward to reading your research. Now, you've obviously met Lieutenant Kingsley and she will be your go to and your overseeing body but you will be working with medical so I would suggest you meet with Doctor Rose and if you have not done so, Lieutenant Vali, she is the counselor as well as holding many posts on the ship. Also we have a new Engineer so perhaps see them as well. They are knowledgeable. Also I would say see the EMH as he is a fascinating personality as well."
"The ethics committee have given me a list of things to be wary of. Equally, anything I do must have an inbuilt safety mechanism to ensure nothing gets out of control. A self destruct protocol, if you will," Scarlet encouraged, "as for meeting everyone, I believe I have seen just about everyone I need to. With the exception of the EMH. He's a little under the weather, so a new prototype has been installed until we can get him fixed, or rather, if we can get him fixed."
"I see." He shrugged. "It seems that you are starting out strong then." He paused. "How have you been settling in ship wise, are the quarters alright, we have had issues with the replicators but I am assured they were fixed."
"I have a few familiar faces from before tmveing on board and my quarters are amazing. I was expecting to have to share, but I don't think anyone has been assigned," she replied honestly before blushing, "it may take me a while to get used to no longer being on a planet, but I'll be OK."
"It is an adjustment, planet to ship, however I have found that a good trick of the trade, so to speak, is if you spend your morning looking out at the stars. It's a reminder of how vast the universe is and how miraculous and adventurous it could be to explore it....also start your day with Vulcan spiced tea as it does wonders for motion sickness."
Scarlet chuckled softly, "I'll remember that one, sir. I appreciate the opportunity, by the way. I was unsure if the Standing Bear would have room for mere researcher. I'm glad you did, this was my first choice in ship."
"Good. Now the administrative things If you will permit." He took a PaDD and pushed it her way. "Your go to point is Alex Kingsley but I tell everyone that my door is always open and if there is some issue you wish to discuss I will listen. That being said the Captain has a similar policy but with some added duties it is best to start here. I usually handle all my appointments myself or I did until the previous Yeoman. We have a new person in that role and she has agreed to handle both my schedule and the Captains so if you'll Contact Ensign Oriana Sety she will be able to accommodate or you can send me a note directly. The ship has a news channel of sorts where people post questions and concerns, I reply or get a department head to reply if I am unable to it is monitored regularly and there are various forums on it that are off limits to myself and the CO, the ship does need a gossip network so we kindly stay out of it. It is a new pilot project I began a few months ago."
"Interesting," Scarlet looked intrigued, "I've never been one for gossip, I just keep my head down. In my defence, it's more I'm oblivious because I've always got my head in a biobed or in a PaDD." She paused, "I know Sety, I met her prior to being on board. I'll save you and go through her if needed. I'm sure everything will be fine though."
"Excellent. Now the finale portion. Do you have any questions at this point?”
Scarlet blushed, "I think, if I'm honest, this is all a lot of information to take on board. I can't think of anything to ask, though I am sure my mind actually has a million questions. Do you have any for me? Or is my file OK?"
He gave a nod, "Understandable. Take some time and process and send me any questions. Your file is sufficient if I think of anything I'll let you know. There will be a new staff orientation tomorrow morning. I insist on everyone being here and it will start on holodeck one at 0700. I will see you there where I will be giving the new staff a talk and then taking you all on a tour of the ship."
Scarlet nodded, "Appreciate it, thank you."
