Doctor Hiiragi meets Nurse Kay'la (Backpost)
Posted on Saturday, 11 March 2023 - 5:25pm by Lieutenant Konata Hiiragi & Lieutenant JG Kay’la
Mission:
Operation: Lobes & Liberties
Location: Sickbay, Deck 5
Timeline: Sometime after 'A Less-Than-Stellar Doctor'
After meeting with the captain, Konata made her way down to deck 5 to assess the situation with her predecessor. Any other medical officer would have been eager to jump right in, but the captain had now also put it in Konata's head about having a staff meeting in Medical, and she was doing this to decide which matter she should prioritize, or if she could get away with putting them both on hold for a little bit so she could tour the starship; at the very least get her bearings for her commute.
Of course, getting her bearings first wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, as Konata had now been wandering around on Deck 5 for a good few minutes now, and she still hadn't found sickbay. Apparently, they didn't care in the alternate universe this starship came from if people lived or died, and didn't label sickbay all that well. Of course, the ship had supposedly undergone a Federation refit, but they had apparently left out labeling sickbay better.
Kay’la was on her way back to Sickbay with her check list of supplies, she made sure to keep on top of what they had to make sure nothing had been forgotten, or mislaid. She smiled as she came across someone who appeared to be lost, given the colour of her uniform she was obviously medical staff. “Can I help you Lieutenant?”
Konata turned in the direction of the question to find someone in a teal uniform standing in front of her. Finally, some progress!
"Ah, yes;" Konata responded. "I was hoping you could point me in the direction of Sickbay. I've probably looped around this deck 3 times now, and I can't seem to find it."
Kay’la offered a warm smile. “I’m on my way there now, if you’d like to follow me I’ll show you the way.” She motioned for the other woman to follow. “I’m Kay’la, I’m guessing from the uniform you’re our new Chief Medical Officer?”
Konata grinned an almost catlike grin.
"That'd be me alright." She said. "Konata Hiiragi, at your service, but I also answer to Kona-Chan."
“It’s nice to meet you Konata.” They approached a set of doors which opened to reveal main Sickbay. “I think we need to get some sort of sign put up outside here, I’ve had several people get lost looking for Sickbay.”
"We're definitely in agreement on that front," Konata said. "Maybe mount a plaque or something in the corridor that's eye-grabbing and tells people without a shadow of a doubt that this is sickbay."
Kay’la nodded. “Agreed. Oh before we go any further...” She handed Konata her PADD. “Our latest inventory, I like to keep on top of supplies just incase anything gets misplaced, or forgotten. The resupply was perfect, we have exactly what we should have I’m glad to say.”
"Nice," Konata responded, looking over the inventory. "Oh, by the way, the captain told me something about the previous doctor being here in a catatonic state? It's super weird; normally an incoming doctor doesn't have to tend to their predecessor."
Kay’la nodded. “It’s all very strange, I’ve made Doctor Selin comfortable but she remains unconscious. Lieutenant Vali might understand what’s happening better, she’s half Vulcan herself.”
"Hmmm... I might need to ask around;" Konata said. "I've seen that there are a few Vulcans on the ship, or at least partial Vulcans. Anyway, do we know if Dr. Selin has a history of Catatonia? It should be in her medical file."
“I did look” Kay’la picked up a PADD and tapped it. “From what I’ve read there’s no history of this, or any other problem.” She handed the PADD containing Selin’s medical history to Konata.
"Well, this certainly complicates things:" Konata said, stroking her chin with her free hand. "Sounds to me like a classic assassination plot. Like somebody wasn't the biggest fan of my predecessor and attempted to have her offed. It's a common plot device used in movies and holonovels, but it's rarely ever used in manga. Like I could count the manga series I know that used this plot device with one hand to give you an idea of how often it's used."
So, this is what the big time feels like? Konata thought as her mind began to wander. You've done it, Hiiragi: You've made it to the upper decks; where they consider you important enough to let you tackle medical mysteries! Hehe, I wonder what those naysayers back on the Suzumiya would think of me now...
“But who would want to hurt Selin?” Kay’la looked at Konata curiously. “There’s been nothing discovered that points to any foul play.”
"That is a good question;" Konata said. "Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to discuss the prevailing theories."
Kay’la nodded. “I know things with the Vulcans have been very strained lately, I just hope this isn’t someone trying to kill a Vulcan. If it is we have a responsibility to warn others onboard.”
"If evidence does point to foul play, I'll be sure to put out an alert to the crew based on security's findings." Konata reassured. "Until then, the best we can do is to make Selin comfortable until she can get that medevac back to Vulcan."
Kay’la nodded again. “Very well, I’ll keep a regular check on her.”
"Alright." Konata said. "Are there any other pressing medical emergencies that require my attention?"
“Not that I’m aware of Doctor” Kay’la shook her head. “Unless anything suddenly changes. You never know around here.”
"Very well." Konata nodded. "If nothing else requires my immediate attention, I believe it's time I familiarized myself with my new sickbay..."
