It was the first morning of Kay’la’s new job, she wanted to make a good impression on the CMO Dr Rose so having woken early she’d walked into Sickbay and immediately set about her duties. She needed to know where everything was and what supplies they had so she grabbed a checklist and set about checking off the Sickbay supplies and making sure they had plenty of extra on order or in the cargo bay incase it was needed.
The woman's entering Sickbay had triggered the auto activation system that had been put into place in the event Dr Rose was away. Emerick's Holo matrix stabilized and he found himself facing a half Klingon. "Greetings," he said trying on a different welcoming. "I am Emerick, the Emergency Medical Hologram for the starship. Please state the nature of your medical emergency."
“Oh ... sorry!” Kay’la offered a smile. “There is no emergency, I work here now. I’m Kay’la, the new head nurse and field medic.” She looked around. “I decided to come in early to acquaint myself with Sickbay and ensure we have all the supplies we need.”
Emerick was relieved and immediately scurried over to Doctor Rose's office and came back with a stack of PaDDs "Save me" he said to the woman. "It's a crew of approximately one hundred when all souls are aboard, and only a handful of us medical. The Doctor is notoriously falling behind on paperwork" he added.
Kay’la smirked, “Ahh so our Doctor isn’t a paperwork man then.” She took the PADDs and gently lay them out on a work surface. “Not a problem, that I can do. Before that I guess I should ask you to do my boarding medical, that’s if you don’t mind of course!”
"He's a good Doctor, excellent surgeon, but as the sole Doctor aboard, he is a bit stretched thin" explained Emerick. "I don't mind doing your boarding."
“Thank you” Kay’la nodded. “I wanted to make a good impression, it’s something I pride myself on. I am dedicated to my work but be warned I can be pretty hot headed, comes with the Klingon DNA.”
Emerick nodded "Rarely meet a Klingon, half or otherwise that doesn't want to punch equipment or people at some point" replied Emerick. "Just try to give everyone a heads up if you feel like breaking something."
“Oh don’t worry I tend to start breathing flames before that happens!” Kay’la grinned. “I try not to let my temper get the better of me but it does happen.”
"It happens with humans as well" commented Emerick. "Except with Doctor Rose. The Doctor is very 'laid back' from what I have observed, but I suspect that is a personality trait one would expect in a surgeon. I guess you need as steady of nerves as you do hands in that case" he added. The EMH retrieved a tricorder and gestured for the woman to hop up onto a bio bed. "Let's get this underway and you can get to work."
Kay’la did as she was asked and hopped up onto the biobed. She was rarely nervous about having a medical, being a nurse she knew the routine.
"You seem a bit nervous," Emerick said with a precision look as he started going over the woman's anatomy with the tricorder. Her vitals were looking fine for being half Klingon. "If you were human, I would be concerned. If you were Klingon I would be a bit perplexed. Though being both, you are within the normal range for your vitals" he said pleasantly enough.
“I can assure you Doctor, I am not nervous!” Kay’la gave Emerick a curious look. “As you said my vitals are within norms for my mixed heritage. I am eager to make a good impression, perhaps that is what you’re picking up on.”
Emerick nodded. Clearly this Klingon had some feathers that had been ruffled in what he had said. Klingons made delightful patients. "My apologies. Yes, it was your eagerness that I was seeing. I am sure you'll make a glorious impression."
“Thank you Sir ... Ryan” She offered a smile. “You don’t have to worry about the whole glory and honour thing though, I’m not a typical Klingon infact I don’t even know who my father is.”
"And I'm not a Doctor" replied Emerick. "Nor is my name Ryan" he added. "I do not believe you suffered a concussion recently, have you had any spoiled gagh?"
“Sorry! I’ve just got my head full of names to remember. I know you’re not Doctor Rose, one of my pitfalls of trying to impress!” She sighed.
"It's alright," the EMH replied. "Those new aboard often come in here and if Doctor Rose is not here, they often will just assume I am he."
“That must be annoying.” Kay’la looked at Emerick curiously. “I know it would bug me to keep being mistaken after a while.”
He nodded "Yes, but it is a lot better than being treated like a Tricorder" he replied. "My reactivation after the ship's latest refitting was an experience. The Chief Engineer walked on in here while Doctor Rose and I were talking, and she just deactivated my program. She was partially Klingon too" he explained. "She has left the ship. I do not know if she requested transfer or if someone came to their senses about having her aboard. She was...I believe P'takh would be a fitting word."
“Ah ...” Kay’la nodded. “Well I promise not to act weird around you.” She smiled warmly. “Actually I feel quite comfortable around you.”
"Thank you," replied Emerick. "You are in good health, and I see no reason not to clear you for active duty aboard."
“That’s great, thank you.” Kay’la nodded and smiled. “I’m looking forward to working with both Doctor Rose and yourself, I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from both of you.”
Emerick nodded "Yes, though I wouldn’t be surprised if we learn from you as well. Nurses tend to be quite knowledgeable and up to date on matters."
“That’s true” Kay’la nodded. “I like to keep my skills up-to-date.”
Emerick gestured to the Chief Medical Officer's office. "Well, with you cleared medically. You think you are up to helping me tackle the paperwork that's been piling up?"
“Sure!” Kay’la nodded enthusiastically. “Call me OCD but I like to have things in order and kept tidy. Anything I can do to help with that I’ll happily do.”
Emerick walked into the office and came back out with a stack of PaDDs. He looked at the half Klingon. "Today is a good day to data inputting" he teased handing over the stack. "There's more in the office. Feel free to use Doctor Rose's work station or one of the auxiliary consoles in Sickbay. I'll get to work on the rest of them."
“Consider them done” Kay’la nodded. “After all today is a good day to work!” She grinned and took her stack over to Rose’s work station.
