Soral held his puppy as he waited for Doctor Rose to join him. He still hadn't named the pup. The dog was proving to be interesting. He seemed to be getting very attached.
Ryan came walking up quickly. He ran a hand through his hair, which was one step away from being considered 'bed head' "Sorry, the morning got a bit away from me. I hope you haven't been waiting long."
"Not at all." He looked at the dog. "I brought the dog. He does not like to be alone." The dog, perked up as Ryan neared. He gave bark of hello.
"Well hello to you as well." Ryan smiled, and reached over to pet the puppy. "That's fine. I'm sure he'll enjoy the base. Have you come up with a name yet?"
"Not as of yet. It is getting rather uncomfortable addressing him. I shall hopefully have a name shortly." He looked at the doctor. "I shall let you lead the way."
"Ok." Ryan got them through the docking port, but then had to pull up a map of the base. He saw something that made him perk up. "Come on. I know exactly where we need to go first." He led them to the shopping area, and to a small shop. As they stepped in Ryan immediately took a deep breath. The smell of coffee was in the air. "I think they have tea too." He told Soral, but his own attention was on the displays of roasted beans.
"I take it you are fond of coffee?" Soral asked as he walked.
"Actually, not really. I mean I like coffee fine, especially when I need caffeine. It's the smell though." Ryan took another big whiff. "It smells so much better than it taste."
"Indeed. I would agree with that assessment." He thrust the dog at the doctor. "If you will hold him I shall get...coffee. Have you ever tried Klingon Coffee"
Ryan eagerly took the pup, making sure the small dog could still see Soral though. "Once, on a dare. I'll stick to a nice medium brew from San Fran." Ryan did decide he'd pick up a pound of coffee, and maybe some chamomile tea while he was here. He'd let Soral shop first though.
Soral brought back the drinks for them and sat down. He was actually looking forward to getting to know the doctor a bit better. "Your coffee." He himself took a cup of Trillan Iced Coffee. It was strong with hints of chocolate, a weakness that Soral had developed.
"Oh. Thank you." Ryan stuck his nose almost in the coffee before taking a big sniff and a content sigh, all the while keeping one hand on the puppy to keep his sensitive nose away from the hot beverage. He nodded to the drink Soral had. "Glad to see you found something you like."
"Trillan coffee is mild but rather delicious." He studied the doctor. "Are you settling in?"
"Yes. sickbay may be small, but she's well equipped. I'm lucky to have every tool I could wish for at my disposal."
Soral had to admit he found himself at a loss for conversation. "I have taken the liberty of acquiring a few Vulcan medications as I know that there are a few aboard. Ensign Yuvlik will require your...attention."
"It won't hurt to have extra in storage." Ryan nodded. "I've got a meeting with a doctor here on base a little later, she's Vulcan. So I plan on brushing up on a few Vulcanoid facts. Anything not in his record you are concerned about regarding Ensign Yuvlik?"
"You refer to Doctor Selin. She is... a fascinating individual." He took a sip of coffee. "The ensign came to see me he has just come down with P'Nar syndrome. Early stages." He wondered if he was familiar with it.
"Do we have anybody who is skilled enough with a mind meld to help?" Ryan asked. A degenerative neural disorder was never pleasant, especially for the one afflicted. Positive outcomes with P'Nar syndrome were few and far between.
"That is what caused it in the first place. There is a new treatment. The Ensign has asked to complete this mission with us and will return to Vulcan for further treatment. He has skills that may be useful to this mission. Doctor Selin can fill you in on the latest treatment." His mind wandered to the Vulcan doctor.
Ryan managed to fish a PaDD out of his pocket and make a quick note to ask Doctor Selin about Ensign Yuvlik. The puppy whined, but before Ryan could discern why, he found his lap getting warm and wet. He should have known. "Definitely need to get those training pads." He looked to Soral. "Do you mind if we take a short break in the shopping? I'm afraid the little guy here hasn't quite learned to hold his bladder."
Soral looked somewhat shocked for a moment. "I do apologize... If you give me a list I am certain I can finish. Again," He said taking the puppy back. "I do apologize.
Ryan waved him off with a smile. "It's alright. It's hardly the first time, and I've had worse bodily fluids on me. Just enjoy your coffee. I'll be back in a few and I'll help you shop."
He gave a nod. When the doctor left he turned to the dog. "That was not nice. You and I must have a conversation regarding social rules."
The dog tilted it's head up at Soral. He gave a little yelp.
"Indeed." Soral said finishing his coffee.
Ryan really was quick, and returned in much drier and better smelling clothes. He pet the puppy to show there were no hard feelings. "Alright, let's get you sorted." He told the pup, then looked to Soral. "Ready?"
"I believe so." He might have bit off more then he could chew. "I have spoken with the dog...I believe that he understands he did something wrong." He said as they walked the promenade.
Ryan could only chuckle. "He's just a puppy, they key is just to offer him a chance to do his business often, and then praise him when he does." As they shopped, Ryan found himself telling many stories about Lilly when she was a puppy. The hyperactive Border Collie had certainly kept him on his toes in his young teenage years. "This little guy seems much more mellow though, don't let my stories worry you."
Through their shopping adventure he'd so far purchased a bed, a harness for walking, puppy pads and various books and training material. As they walked to the toy section Soral said, "I must admit to a certain difficulty with all this. I have never had a pet and this one...seemed determined to come with me." He placed the dog down in the top section. It sat and looked up at Soral. He, in turn, looked down at the dog. "Go an pick your toys." The dog just stared at him. "He's not responding," Soral said turning to Ryan.
"He's probably just tired and overstimulated. We've been out for awhile. You can just pick an assortment, then see what he's drawn too later?" Ryan suggested.
"I see. Do they have puzzles for dogs?" He asked in all seriousness.
Ryan held a straight face, but barely. It seemed even Vulcans weren't immune from anthropomorphism. "I don't know. Something to research." Ryan offered.
Soral strolled the shop. His first choice was what looked like a rubber bone. He picked it up, applying a tad too much strength, and the bone emitted a large squeak. Soral dropped it stepping away, clearly startled.
The small pup looked up at Ryan and gave a whimper lowering his head and covering his eyes as if to say save me from this nut.
Ryan took mercy on the pup and picked him up, holding him close and soothing him. "Well I think you can safely eliminate all squeaky toys. Count your blessings, you won't have to be woken up by that sound at 4am."
"Indeed." He returned the toy slowly to the shelf. The rest of the trip went well. By the time they finished several toys had been purchased and were to be delivered on ship. The men now walked the promenade, the puppy wearing his new walking harness. "Your help is very appreciated doctor."
"It's no problem, really. I enjoyed myself." He gave the pup a scratch behind his ear. "And again, feel free to call me any time if you need a dog sitter. I've got dinner plans soon though, so I better get going."
Soral gave a nod. "Thank you. Will need to get him back and then I have a seminar I will be attending tonight." He gave a bow. "Until next time Doctor."
"Until next time." Ryan gave a little nod.
