Cross Department Co-op

Posted on Tuesday, 7 April 2020 - 11:04am by Commander Soral & Lieutenant Raith Kolani

Mission: Operation: Overdrive
Location: Cargo bay | USS Fontana
Timeline: 2393 (Just after Launch)

{ON:}

Soral had come to the cargo bay in search of the Ops Chief but had ended up spending the last hour helping move cargo containers. He was a very get into the thick of things person so he enjoyed the work. It also had a meditative quality to it. He left Cargo Bay on and headed off to Cargo Bay 2.

Whilst working away in the Cargo Bay, completing the inventory of supplies and spare parts that had been delivered on board by one of the Taurus Bay Runabouts, Raith looked up from his PADD to see Lt Cmdr Soral enter the room. He smiled for a moment, wondering if the XO was there to offer a hand with his task, however, the thought soon faded as he realized that he'd probably do a better job on his own.

Marking his place in the Cargo Bay and on the Inventory PADD, Raith walked over to the XO. "Commander? Is there something I can help you with?"

"Lieutenant." He gave a nod. They had met in Victrix's office. "I had come in search of you but had ended up spending longer in Cargo Bay one than planned. I did wish to speak with you." He motioned to everything, "How is everything progressing. I was down in Cargo Bay one working with your staff all those items have been arranged and secured."

"Well, it doesn't hurt to have Senior Officer doing a bit of the groundwork now and then, its good to keep your foot in," Raith answered. "I hope that you found my staff helpful and efficient."

Walking into one of the cargo bays was with a PaDD in hand was Senior Chief Petty Officer Alvaro Muniz. His labcoat swayed with his hips a bit, his science uniform wrinkle-free and crisply snug against his slim figure. He saw the two men conversing. One of them, Vulcan which was the starship's First Officer and the other a human that Alvaro knew was the Chief Operations Officer. It went without saying that both gentlemen were far higher on the rungs of ship structure than he was. "Commander," he said to Soral with a pleasant nod and to the other he simply smiled and greeted "Lieutenant," it was likely to find the Ops manager putting in some work in the cargo bays, but the command uniform of Soral's stuck out.

Soral had a photographic memory. He'd memorized all the photo and bios of the crew. "Senior Chief Muniz. I was going to see you later today. How is the science department preparation going." He knew that there had been nobody in a senior officer capacity yet but he knew that Muniz had a good record.

"The preparation is going fine, Sir" he replied answering the immediate question, but he did have a bit more to say on the matter. "I understand that our current mission is not scientific in nature, but where we are going is problematic. The space where the USS Camelot is...that's rather rough. We're talking eddies and anomalies that have torn starships apart much larger than us" commented the man. "I don't know what can be done about the personnel matter, Commander, but respectfully if there's anyone in Operations..." he added looking at Lieutenant Kolani now. "If there is anyone at all that has a science background, we could use their help" he finished.

Soral raised an eyebrow. "I was a science officer prior to taking on the security and command role. I can assist a little with preparations if you require and I can put a call in to move some staff around."

Raith smiled as he heard the chance to get involved with a little tinkering and the chance to assist the Science Department. "I'm not the most scientific type, but if you need apparatus re-calibrating, augmenting or you have the need for some brand new apparatus being created for mission-specific purposes, I'll be happy to help out," he offered. He was also glad of the chance to to get to the know the crew better as well.

Soral listened to the Ops chief. So far he was quite impressed with the man.

"Appreciated, both of you sirs" replied Alvaro. "The science department at present is myself and a few other enlisted lab techs and sensor analysts," he said informingly though Soral was likely well aware of that. "No disrespect intended, Commander. I know the Captain and yourself have more pressing matters than a science department during a nonscientific mission aboard a border patrol vessel" he added.

"No disrespect taken. I find your dedication a valuable quality. It is vital to have staff that are dedicated enough to fight for their department. I can only apologize for the circumstances you find yourself in and assure you that I and Commander Victrix will do our best to assist you in finding more staff and reassigning those that are qualified."

Raith stepped over to the conversation, having marked his place in his inventory check already. "What do you need ahead of the mission Chief? How can I help from an Ops or even an Engineering perspective? I've got a background in both." he offered. "If we're moving towards an area of space where we look at facing eddies and anomalies, then it sounds like the various Sensor arrays will need to be up to the job and prepared. Also, where feasible on a ship this size, potentially backups as well."

Going into unexplored areas of space was Raith's idea of fun, however, as with all missions and starships he served on, he wanted to be prepared.

"We have the star charts pulled up for where the USS Camelot is currently located" replied Alvaro. "That took more time than I care to admit. It's a navigational nightmare and not too much has been properly charted out that way. We may have been refitted with the best sensors that the Federation and Starfleet has to offer right now, but if you could take a look and see if there are any tweaks that you can make to them to enhance their efficiency without taking too much from the ship's power reserves that would be appreciated. I'm also concerned about the deflector dish with all we may encounter out there."

Someone called out for a hand moving a bin. "I shall assist. He told the Ops Chief. When you to complete your discussion Lieutenant please see me I did have a matter to discuss with you." He nodded to the Senior chief and moved off to help with moving the heavy bin.

Alvaro Muniz chuckled a little to himself. "Well, I did not expect coming down here to check on science cargo would have turned my frown upside down, but it certainly has. All this extra help will certainly aid preparations for the science department."

Raith grinned. "It's not a problem, I'll have a look at the specs for the various Sensor suites we have onboard and also for the Deflector Dish. I'm sure that the specs themselves leave for a healthy margin of safety in various areas and I have a few ideas about how we can safeguard them whilst heading into an area of space we don't know a lot about," he offered.

"I'll go and have a look into this after I've finished the inventory here and then come back to you in a few hours, hows does that sound?" Raith asked.

"Like you are a saint" replied Alvaro. "Thank you again, Lieutenant. I appreciate any assistance that I can get right now" he said to Raith then turned to the First Officer "And Commander, any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. When I was given this assignment, my expectations were overseeing lab work, not prepping a department for deep space travel."

Soral had returned from helping move a few bins just in time to bid the Senior Chief goodbye and cement his offer of help. When Alvaro left Soral turned to Raith. "I must thank you. Your people put in a water shower for me and a cooktop and preservation box. I really appreciate all that Ops is doing."

Raith shook his head. "It's not a problem, Commander, we're here to help where we can," he said. "Whilst we're in dock, I can easily get the parts that are required and I believe that a comfortable officer is a happy officer. We're not just miracle workers you know."

Raith finished his sentence with a smile. Truth be told, he was happy there was plenty to be done on board before they launched, it gave him the chance to make his mark and see what he could do. "If you require anything else, just let me know," he added.

"Yes I actually would like to request a favour," Soral said.

"Oh, do tell Commander? What is it I can help with?" Raith offered.

"I know that many departments tend to prioritize command staff requests that are personal of nature. If I should request something," he said. "I wish you to prioritize the crew over me."

Raith nodded as he understood the nature behind the XO's request and that it wasn't an easy one to take. "I understand Commander, I'll follow your order and will prioritize the crew over you should you request something," he confirmed.

Soral gave a nod. "Well, I should get back to the bridge. Lieutenant, thank you." He gave a slight nod and headed out.
