ON:

Soral and Alex were just sitting down to breakfast before seeing doctor Rose when the coms officer called saying there was an urgent call from Vulcan.

Putting down her slice of toast, Alex glanced at her husband, her expression a mix of curiosity and concern. After recent events on Earth it was easy to let your mind wander down the path of something being wrong, yet she quashed the panic and reminded herself that her mother had once called her at the Academy because of a spider in the bathroom. Following Soral to the computer terminal she stood behind him, her hand resting on his shoulder as they waited for the call to be patched through.

"Mum, what's wrong?"

"Hello to you too dear," her mother gently chided. "And maybe nothing, but maybe something. The Ambassador told me of the guests who would be staying with us, the poor man and his baby... but Fang was most disturbed by a Romulan showing up on his doorstep. Apparently on your instruction, Soral? I thought it prudent to check in with you both, given the children are here."

"Yes. I have sent a letter with him. Solek my half brother by my mother."

Laura thought on that for a moment and then nodded, "well, that is alright then. I didn't want to take any chances, given the efforts you went to getting us safely back to Vulcan."

"Indeed. Very wise. I thought that perhaps having a Romulan reminder will allow the children to learn both their cultures."

"Of course," Laura nodded. "Is there anyone else you expect to join us? So Fang does not have a fit the next time? He seemed to think there was an invasion. I had no idea Ferengi were so... dramatic!"

Soral smiled a little. "Indeed.... he think anything more then two is an invasion. Not that is all I am expecting." He stood. "I shall let the two of you speak."

As he vacated the seat, Alex sat down and frowned at her mother's expression. "What?"

"Running low on uniforms in Starfleet, dear?" she asked with a grin.

Alex glanced over her shoulder at Soral and grinned before turning back to her mother, "possibly. How are things on Vulcan? Invasions aside?"

"I was actually just starting to write you a letter earlier today, but I didn't finish it. Yet. The Ambassador asked me to join him at a concert and then we had a delightful meal. And karaoke."

"Come again?" Alex asked, sure she must have misheard.

"Karaoke," her mother repeated, "it was a most wonderful afternoon."

"Uh huh," Alex murmured as she studied her mother, "you look... different."

"Frizzy hair?" she suggested.

"No," she shook her head. "Wait, frizzy hair?"

"I was an hour this morning," her mother confided.

Alex groaned. "Great."

"You'll figure it out," her mother laughed.

"You are changing the subject," Alex accused.

"Mother's prerogative. How are you both?"

"We are doing okay. Working on it," Alex assured her.

Laura beamed at her, "that's all you can ever do. Now, what can you tell me about this little baby?"

"The baby? Oh... there was an attack on the station, Soral intervened but the woman... she didn't make it. They were able to save the baby though. Soral offered to let him stay with us, well, you all. I'm sure he will be no trouble. And you did say, you wanted distractions."

"I suppose you did prepare me for anything a well behaved Vulcan child could possibly do," Laura conceded. "It's a miracle you didn't do yourself a serious mischief."

"I tried."

"I know," Laura interjected. "How is the research study?"

Alex rolled her eyes, knowing it was a typical distraction on her mother's part. "It goes... slowly. I'll be done on time. Provided I stop losing samples."

"I suppose you have much to distract you," Laura teased.

"Likewise," Alex countered without missing a beat.

Soral had changed and came out wearing a uniform. He walked over to his wife. "The doctor is ready to see us now."

Alex flashed him a look just as her mother spoke up, “doctor? Are you still unwell, Soral?”

"No. Just a check up for us both. By regulation we are due for physicals next week so we might as well finish them early." It wasn't a lie but neither was it the complete truth.

“I’m sure you do,” Laura replies with a tone that made it clear she was not fooled. Not for a moment. “I shall let you both go. Stay safe, both of you.”

“We will,” Alex promised. “Love you all.”

Soral said his goodbyes . When the coms closed he kissed the top of his wife's head. "Shall we go?"

She nodded, taking his hand. “I know it is a long shot and no matter what,” she stressed, “it doesn’t change how I feel.”

"And nothing will change how I feel." He said. "Let us see the doctor. We leave Jupiter Station soon."

“Then let’s go.”
