ON:
Hamura wouldn't take a risk, not when the last time had resulted in cardiac surgery. "Ensign Hamura to sickbay."
Kay’la was on duty in Sickbay when Hamura’s call came through. “Kay’la here, what can I do for you Ensign?”
"I need someone in my quarters right away. Medical emergency!"
Kay’la grabbed an emergency med kit, “Understood I’ll be right there!” She hit her comm badge and requested a site-to-site transport to save time. As she materialised outside Hamura’s Quarters she let herself inside.
Hamura was on the floor holding Oriana who was gasping for breath. She was pale, sweating her eyes unfocused. "She says it's a panic attack but the last time this happened it didn't stop and she had heart surgery just before boarding....I didn't want to risk it."
Kay’la nodded. “Okay, can you tell me what started this?” She moved across to the replicator and came back with an old-fashioned paper bag. “This is going to seem strange ... Oriana can you hear me? I need you to breathe into this. Just breathe into the bag, in and out slow breaths.”
Hamura, who looked panicked, said, "I came home and found her on the ground like this."
Oriana did as the nurse asked. She felt horrible! That's why she didn't like roommates.
Kay’la nodded as she monitored Oriana on her tricorder. “Once we’ve got this under control I want you in Sickbay for a complete medical.” She looked to Hamura. “She’ll be fine, don’t worry.”
Hamura gave a nod.
It took several minutes but she calmed enough to speak. "No sickbay. I...I'm fine." She tried to get up but Hamura swung her into his arms and gently placed her on the sofa. "I'll get some water." He looked at Kay'la, "Can I give her water?"
“You can but just slow sips.” She looked at Oriana. “No arguments Oriana. You can return once I’ve fully checked you over.”
She was about to say something but Hamura came and sat by her. Holding the glass to her lips Hamura said, "She's right. You just had heart surgery before we boarded. You need to be checked out."
Oriana pushed the glass away. "I'm fine..."
"I'll go with you, it'll be alright."
In the end they won out. She was sitting on a bio bed in sickbay with Hamura by her side. "It'll be okay." Taking her hand Hamura held it waiting for the Nurse to come back with the results.
Kay’la had looked through the readings she took and compared them to Oriana’s medical records. She was glad to see that all was well within norms for Oriana. She smiled as she walked over to the bio-bed. “How are you feeling?”
"I'm alright. There really isn't a need to make a fuss about all this. I'm really fine."
Hamura reached out taking her hand. "Better to check."
Oriana looked at the nurse. "I really appreciate your help," she said pulling her hand from Hamura's. "I just want to go back to my room."
Kay’la looked at the PADD displaying the results of Oriana’s readings. “Well all your readings are looking good, blood pressure is a little elevated, but given the circumstances I’m not surprised. Can you tell me what triggered your panic attack?”
"I have them all the time. It's nothing new. I've learned to deal with them. I've had them since I was a child."
Kay’la nodded. “In that case I want you to see Counsellor Vali, she might be able to help you with these panic attacks.”
"I'll take it under consideration, may I leave now?" She felt like a caged animal.
Hamura could sense all the feelings tumbling inside her, anxiety, anger, hopelessness, shame... But she would not listen now. She needed some time. "Nurse what if I promise to look out for her, maybe she'd be better recovering at home."
Kay’la nodded. “That’s fine, just take it easy and make that appointment with T’Lanna or I will do it for you.”
Oriana shot out of the sickbay with lightening speed. Hamura was left behind and sighed. "I don't think she will. I can't begin to tell you what she's feeling. There is so much that … well it's been a long time since my Betazoid senses were overwhelmed like this."
Kay’la nodded. “Right, I’ll mention it to Counsellor Vali and have her drop by to see Oriana instead. For now I suggest you give her some space, if she gets overwhelmed again it could trigger another attack.
Hamura gave a nod. "I wish I could help her."
“Just give it time” Kay’la smiled. “She’s overwhelmed, she just needs some time to relax.”
Hamura gave a nod. "Thanks for coming so quickly. I didn't want to risk it the last time this happened she wound up in surgery."
Kay’la nodded. “Well her readings are all good, just keep an eye on her and don’t be afraid to call again if you need to.”
Hamura gave a nod. "Thank you."
Kay’la nodded and smiled. “My pleasure, it’s what I’m here for.”
Hamura headed back to the quarters that were shared with Oriana. Immediately upon arrival Hamura could tell she was in her room. Hearing the sobs and feeling the embarrassment and pain she was feeling. Gently placing a hand on the door Hamura said, “Oriana open the door.”
“Go away! Leave me alone! Why did you have to call medical?”
“Because the last time this happened you had a heard procedure. It’s still all fresh and raw and I wanted to make sure you were alright.”
“I told you I was fine.”
“You said that the last time too. Oriana I was worried.”
There was silence then. “Oriana?”
“Just leave me alone.”
Hamura sighed. “I’m here to talk, if you need to talk I’m here I promise.” With that Hamura headed to the Sofa and sat down. If she needed to talk Hamura would be there. The emotions rolling around inside her were familiar ones and sometimes not having someone to talk to was so isolating. “I’m here Oriana…”
