Missed Date
Posted on Sunday, 5 September 2021 - 3:03pm by Lieutenant Scarlet Rogers & Lieutenant Ryan Rose MD
Mission: Operation: Lazarus
It had been a week or three since Ryan and Scarlet's last date. It was difficult, especially with Ryan being called out a lot. Oh, the life of a doctor. Tonight, they were supposed to have had dinner to compensate.
She'd cooked some roast dinner, served up and waited for as long as she could before eating. She left a plate for him on the side. The woman, of course, had heard about the Trell-D issue and so wasn't mad. If anything, she wanted to make sure Ryan was OK. Hence, why she was still here, waiting and saving food.
The minutes rolled into hours, and before she knew it, the woman had fallen asleep on the sofa. She was curled up in the very corner of it, with her cardigan over her shoulders having been repurposed as a blanket.
Ryan had finally gotten T'Lanna stabilized after surgery, and there was nothing further he could do at the moment. She needed time to rest and fully recover from the surgery, before running more neurological test. One set of odd scans was not conclusive, not so soon after radiation exposure and standard, but major surgery. So he trudged home, tired. He dropped his labcoat right at the door. He then spotted Scarlet on the couch and sighed in relief. He felt a bit guilty, but went to kneel at the foot of the couch and kissed her cheek.
Scarlet woke up at the kiss. The woman was such a light sleeper. "Hi," she smiled to him and kissed him softly.
"Hey. Sorry to wake you. But I couldn't resist." He smiled. "I missed you. But you could have taken the bed, I hardly would have complained."
Scarlet sat up stiffly, "I didn't think I'd actually sleep. I was watching Avengers 9." She gestured to the kitchen before stretching, "I kept you some food."
"I'm sorry. We had a date." Ryan rubbed a hand over his face and sighed. Sometimes, he really hated being the only doctor on the ship. "Thank you for making dinner. I'll go heat it up. Do you want a plate or have you eaten?"
"I've eaten," she replied with a yawn, "but thank you. I stuck around to make sure you ate. Doctors have a habit of only being able to look after others and not themselves." Scarlet put her hands on his cheeks, "I know you'll make it up to me on our next date."
"I'll try." He smiled. He went to pick up his lab coat before heading to the kitchen. He quickly grabbed a plate before returning to the couch. "mmm, you make a good roast." He said between bites. "How are you? I feel like we haven't even seen each other."
Scarlet smiled and chirped, "thank you." She then shrugged, "I've been OK. I've been focused on the research. Working with the new EMH too, so I can get up my practical hours. I've done a few schematics ready for prototypes for my research too. Should be able to do a few test runs in a few weeks. You?"
Ryan sighed. "Exhausted." He admitted. "I can't seem to keep this ship from losing crew."
Scarlet looked him over. It was a very odd statement from Ryan. He was normally such the optimist, at least in her eyes. She reached over and put a hand on his leg, in an attempt at comfort, "you can't help that, you know. It's a hazard of being in Starfleet. You at least try and make people well after they get hurt."
He nodded. "I know. Sorry." He took a breath. "I just need to sleep." He squeezed her hand. "Come to bed?"
"Only once you're done eating and have had a chance to just sit down a minute," she replied with a smile. The woman had no tone to command, probably why she never climbed the ranks or employment ladder too quickly. But, alas, the woman tried.
Ryan smiled. "Ok, that sounds like a good plan." He went back to his meal. "At the next opportunity, we should take two days and do absolutely nothing." He waggled his eyes just a bit, but there was no true intention in it. "Well not nothing."
Scarlet chuckled softly, "a day off or two does sound good. Especially now that I have officially moved in, and unpacked, my last box and signed away my quarters."
Ryan put his plate down and smiled over at her. "I missed the unpacking. I'm sorry. This whole dating a doctor thing really sucks, doesn't it?"
Scarlet chuckled, "yes and no. I knew what I signed up for, so I'm a forgiving person, but there are those that would give up. I know that when you are here-- you're here. If that makes sense. The time we do have always makes up for what we missed."
Ryan smiled and pulled her in for a hug. "I love you. I will try and be here more. I've asked for a replacement doctor, but all I'm getting is a medic, and that won't be until we reach a base. Thank you for being patient with me." He yawned into her shoulder, but was unwilling to let go just yet.
Scarlet hugged him back teasing, "You're lucky I love you, or I'd make you repay the countless dates you've missed or been late for. Instead, I'll just ground you so that you can't watch anything DC for a month or two." She sat back, "come on, you need to sleep. A sleep deprived doctor, is a bad doctor."
Ryan snorted in amusement. "That's just an excuse for you to demand an iron man marathon." He teased back, letting himself be led to the bedroom.
Scarlet yawned, humming the avengers theme before replying, "true, but you'll survive."
"I'll even make the popcorn." He kissed her forehead and flopped to the bed, apparently not caring that he was still fully dressed.
Scarlet watched him, and whilst tired herself, she couldn't help but try and care for him, still. She attempted to take his uniform and boots off, trying to coax him to help himself, "come on. You'll thank me in the morning."
Ryan fumbled with his clothes. He left them in a pile at the foot of the bed and curled back up, clad only in his boxer briefs. He reached his arm out as if expecting to find her. He managed to open his eyes and look to her. "Cuddle a bit?" He half mumbled.
Scarlet smiled, whilst folding his clothes and moving them to the corner if the room, before going for her own clothes, "of course, this is my bed too now, you know."
Ryan missed her cheek and ended up kissing her hair as he curled into her. He was very quickly asleep.
