Of Vulcan Things

Mission: Operation: Trail of Tears
Location: USS Standing Bear | Various
Timeline: 2394 MD 0

ON:

By the time they reached her old quarters, Lieutenant Kingsley had to admit her flash of fury at a certain Vulcan had abated to a mere mild annoyance. She followed him inside not entirely sure they should be troubling Haru and unsure if he was even well enough for this. That and ... she realised she had stopped just inside the doorway. Given what had happened when she sat by Haru’s bedside and Dr Rose’s words still ringing in her ears, she wanted to take no chances.

Eyelaya looked up. "Perfect timing. I have to run to engineering." She said her goodbyes and hurried out.

“Something we said?” Alex teased as the door closed. “Hey Haru.”

Haru gave a nod. "H...Hello." His voice was shaky but it was there. He was pushing to get the words out but he as determined.

“Mac thinks you’ve been getting way too much rest so you need your unofficial favourite unrelated kind of sister to ask you for some help,” Alex told him with an apologetic smile.

He smiled. "Al..Always."

She held up a hand, “don’t be so quick. It’s a .... delicate situation.”

He simply smiled. Mac sat down on the sofa. "Pon Farr delicate."

Haru smiled. "Aaa ask a...awa...y."

“What happens if we can’t establish a bond before Soral’s time comes?” Alex asked. “Right now, Dr Rose says even a mind meld is too dangerous until I’ve healed some more.”

"N...not needed." He managed. "Only location."

“I don’t understand,” Alex admitted. “Well I get the physical part, obviously. But everything I’ve been able to find says a bond of some kind is involved.”

Haru motioned for Mac. He held up a hand, Mac understood. He allowed Haru to touch his mind. It took moments. When it ended Mac turned to Alex. "Ohhhh I get it. Okay so there are many aspects to it."

Haru nodded finding it frustrating that he couldn't explain but glad that Mac was there where he could telepathically tell him what to say.

Mac went on, "It seems that the physical aspect can...help but there will be a time when it won't work. There will be a time where the urge to return to Vulcan to the land will be great. Some have used the holodeck and that works to a point as does...the physical but it is temporary. Haru thinks that the reason it worked for Soral the first time was two fold. Soral told him that they were on the holodeck a Vulcan program and ... um... how do I put this."

“Don’t get bashful on me now,” Alex pleased.

"Well in itself the bond would have been necessary however a sort of bond was created. The... um... kids being conceived. They were mentally liked to both parents. The whole deal of Vulcan life is to take a mate, to have kids..." Mac, for the first time in his life, blushed.

“Why, Mac, you are blushing!” Alex teased. “And I get why Vulcans go through this... But let’s assume, for argument sake, there will be no children being conceived this time around. So no kind of bond that way either.”

"Then it could be problematic." Mac said.

Alex groaned as she sank into a nearby chair. She stared up at the ceiling, her frustration starting to boil over. If she were a Vulcan none of this would be an issue. “What do I do?” She asked quietly.

Haru reached out and with his hand shaking he put a hand over hers. "Wh...when time...comes....take hi...him." He paused to allow his mind to rest. "Take to Vul...Vulcan."

She hadn’t been paying attention, or at least not enough. Only when she felt a hand on hers did a tiny part of her brain realise it had to be Haru because Mac was at the other side. Yet the realisation came at the same time that images flashed into her mind. Not as extreme or overwhelming as when she had sat in his hospital room but still... her breath caught as, for an instant it felt as if she were standing on Vulcan, looking out over the desert and the mountains. And then it was gone as she yanked her hand away and jumped to her feet even as her head felt like it was about to split apart.

She frowned, gripping the back of the seat as the world spun. “That was.. definitely Vulcan,” she breathed.

Mac stood and placed his hand on her. "Are you alright?"

“I’ll be fine,” she said as she looked towards Haru, “how can you keep doing that?”

"I...don...t know."

“Soral is going to kill me. You cannot tell him,” she told them both. “I need to go lie down... yeah...”

It was a solid plan, if only her legs had been equally solid. As soon as she let go of the chair the floor seemed to rush up to greet her until someone grabbed hold of her. “Maybe calling Soral is a good idea...” she conceded.

Mac didn't wait. He called Soral and within moments the door to their quarters was chiming. Mac had lifted her into his arms and laid her on the sofa.

"Enter."

Soral entered the room and his eyes settled on Alex. "Alexandra." He dropped to his knees taking her hand. "What happened?"

“I’m okay,” she breathed.

~I communicated telepathically with her.~ Haru sent to Soral.

Soral's eyes widened. "You what?! She is not to have any telepathic communication."

“Sshh,” Alex said as she held up a finger to her husbands lips, or tried to. She succeeded on the second attempt. “Don’t be angry, it wasn’t on purpose. Was my fault...”

"It most certainly was not." He said. He sat her up and sat down beside her pulling her into his arms. He looked at Mac.

"I'll get water." Hurrying to the replicator he got some water and gave it to Soral who held it to Alex's lips. "Drink."

Not wishing to antagonise him, she drank deeply. She was fairly certain it didn’t help nearly as much as Soral’s presence. “Haru didn’t know,” she managed after Soral took the glass away.

He looked at Haru. "You must ensure you do not communicate with her telepathically. What was so important that it required it?"

Mac and Haru seemed to go quiet.

“They were helping to answer some questions... about Vulcans,” Alex said after a moment. “Can we go home?”

He looked at both of them. "Alright." He stood, hoisting Alex into his arms.

“Soral, please put me down,” Alex protested. “I can walk. I think.”

"I enjoy caring you. Would you take that from me?"

"That seems unfair," she grumbled. "People on this ship will start to think I can't walk on my own two feet if you keep carrying me everywhere..."

He kissed her, "Let them think." He levelled a look at Haru. "This is not over." He turned and headed out the door.

Alex groaned. She had come to Haru for some help and ended up causing him trouble. She peered around Soral, mouthing 'sorry' in Haru and Mac's direction before they were out into the corridor and the door closing behind them.
