Martial Arts

Mission:
Operation: Neu Reich
Location: Holodeck | USS Standing Bear
Timeline: 2394
ON:
Lieutenant Talarn Zilth stood in front of one of the deck four holosuites. Number two, to be exact. He had arrived there for a lesson and he was early. He was currently tapping in the contents of what he wanted the holosuite to do when his student arrived. Ensign Oriana Skye Sety was to be that pupil, but she was not expected for another several moments.
Oriana, ever the early bird, headed to the holodeck. She'd remembered to wear loose clothing and was ready for today. She was looking forward to learning some Martial Arts. It would be good for her body as well as her mind. She had been thinking about too much as of late. She hoped this would clear her head.
The Ex-Borg paused briefly to glance at her when she arrived. “Hello, Ensign.” He continued to tap at the console. “You are early,” he stated.
She smiled. "Absolutely! I believe in being early, but never late." She gave a nod. "How are you, Sir?"
The light over his right eye blinked slowly and he turned his head a little. “It is a good practice. I am almost done... then we can inside. How much combat has you had? Even if it was just yoga...”
"Just what I got when with Starfleet, so very basic." She grinned sheepishly. "But I have always wanted to learn."
“Good. Your interest is important as well.” He tapped at the console for just a few more seconds then stepped away from and gestured at the door. It opened. Talarn nodded. “Everything is ready. Go ahead.”
Oriana gave a nod. "Thank you." She walked inside feeling excited. She'd always liked learning new things and self-defence was one of those new things that she'd always wanted to dive deeper into.
The room beyond was spartan. There was also some sort of mat on the floor that was obviously there to absorb impact. Talarn followed her into the room. “So they make everyone do boot camp... so you had to do something... boxing? Kickboxing? Judo? Was there anything that you felt... more akin to?”
"Just basic hand-to-hand, but I have always wanted to learn kickboxing... great for defense and also keeping the weight off!" She smiled.
“Computer... kickboxing, please.” The room changed, looking suddenly like a gym with all of the training equipment and a ring. “Do you know how to put the pads on?” He made his way to where the gear was and started to lay out a set for each of them.
She grinned sheepishly. "Not really."
He gestured to the small bench. “Sit... I will help. Take off your shoes and socks.”
She sat down and did as he asked. "I have to warn you, I'm not going to be very good at this."
Talarn laughed warmly. “No one is very good at anything when they first start.” He started to help her put the gear on. Once they were done with her gear, he stepped aside and put on his own. “So... walk around and see how it feels. It should be tight, but not cutting off blood flow.” He pulled on his gloves. “Jump up and down, bend, run around... make sure the gear is moving with you.”
She stood and walked around. "Hm...I think I feel like an unfinished marshmallow."
She smiled at Talarn's warm laugh. She got the feeling he didn't laugh easily so she felt honoured that he did so with her.
The session was difficult and every part of her body hurt but she’d learned so much and she’d really enjoyed every moment of it. She’s even convinced the Cardassian to give her more lessons.
Having said her goodbyes to Talarn she headed home for a shower and to change. She felt more energized then she had in years. When she started on the ship there was some anxiety but now she felt that it was slipping away more and more. She was feeling comfortable with the ship, the crew, and she really liked the CO.
She also reflected on the fact that she had only been on the ship a short time but she was growing and changing and life along with it. She was finding an inner strength that he didn’t know she had and Talarn was a big part of that. His class, even just the one class, had made her feel so powerful and so strong, something she hadn’t felt in a long time. He seemed scarry to people but to her he was the person that gifted her with a sense of strength that she’d never had. During their session he’d encouraged her, he’d helped her, he’d never criticized but always lovingly corrected. She smiled as she thought that he and Stillwater would make great fathers some day.
“Thank you Talarn.” She said as she entered her quarters. She was determined to send the Security Chief a note of thanks and tell him how much she couldn’t wait for the next lesson.
OFF:
OOC: Dearest Kim,
Thank you for writing with me. Thank you for sharing your character and for being fun, and amazing, and a great friend to all. Your posts inspired and Talarn is one of a kind from your image of him to the way you played him. I’m deeply sorry we never got to finish this post together. I would have loved to see Tal’s reaction to the marshmallow comment. You will never be forgotten. You will always be missed.
