It had been a long day and a longer night, things between T’Lanna and Raith had been pretty strained of late through no fault of either of them. Long shifts and T’Lanna’s recent near death experience hadn’t helped matters much. Now she was up in the middle of the night with concerns about Jayce, he’d picked up something and wasn’t at all his usual cheery little self. Cradling him in her arms she arrived at Sickbay looking for some reassurance.
As the doors opened she walked inside surprised to see Jarin. “Jarin?” She offered a warm smile. They’d become good friends before he’d had to leave, she had no idea he was back. “It’s good to see you.”
"Hey T'Lanna" he said with a smile on his face "is everything okay?" it wasn't normal for someone to walk into sickbay in the middle of the night just to visit.
T’Lanna looked down at her son. “It’s Jayce...he’s not well. I don’t know what’s wrong.”
Jarin started toward her with a concerned look on his face. He had become quite attached to the little fella and couldn't stand to see anything happen to him "what's going on?" he asked.
T’Lanna gently placed her son down on a biobed. “He’s been very agitated, I checked his temperature which was up so I gave him the usual infant suspension from the replicator to bring it down. That was about...an hour ago, It doesn’t seem to be doing any good!” She looked at Jarin concerned. “It’s not like he’s been anywhere except at the nursery, or with his nanny whilst I’ve been working.”
Jarin pulled a tricorder from a cart and started scanning the infant "how long has he had the fever?" he asked while the scans started coming in.
“I...don’t know exactly.” She hung her head feeling guilty. “He was fine last night, just a bit grizzly first thing this morning. I should have kept a closer watch on him! At least dropped into nursery to check on him!” She gave Jarin a teary eyed look.
"He's going to be okay" he gave her a reassuring smile and looked down at the tricorder readings to make sure he wasn't lying.
“I should tell Raith” T’Lanna wiped away a few stray tears. “We err...we decided to just be friends from now on. Things between us have been a little rocky lately, more my fault though Raith says it isn’t.” She sighed.
"I'm sorry to hear that" Doctor Alexander glanced up from the tricorder and then back down. "Jayce has an upper respiratory infection" it was something that happened in infants from time to time.
T’Lanna breathed a sigh of relief, she’d been thinking it was something horrific. “Is it easily treated?”
"We can clear it up pretty quickly" he held up a hypo and gave a warm smile.
T’Lanna smiled. “Thank heavens for easy cures. How long should it take to work?”
Pressing the hypo to the child and administering the medication "about an hour and I want him to come back for a follow up dose and check up tomorrow evening" he smiled at T'Lanna "little guy's gonna be fine."
She smiled and nodded. “Do you mind if we stay for a little while? Just until Jayce has settled down? I’m pretty wired.”
"Yeah that's fine" Jarin reached out and offered her a hug.
T’Lanna accepted the hug, she’d missed the close friendship she had with Jarin. “Have you had a chance to catch up on my medical file yet?”
"Not yet" he said giving her a look of concern "something I need to look into?" Jarin asked.
T’Lanna shook her head. “No, I was exposed to an almost lethal dose of Trellium D. Ryan pulled me back from death’s door. I had to have an artificial liver and lungs.” She shrugged her shoulders. “We’re not sure about long term effects yet, I got lucky Trel D usually drives Vulcans exposed to it insane.” She drifted off into a memory. “I had to sit and watch those trapped with me, go insane and die.”
"I'm so" he had a frown on his face "I'm so sorry that happened to you" he was already thinking about starting research and finding out as much as he could.
“Thank you” She smiled “It’s taken some getting through, but this crew have a way of getting you through anything.”
"They are pretty good folks" Jarin said with a smile on his face, scanning the baby again just to check on him. He was very fond of the kiddo and couldn't stand to see anything happen to him.
T’Lanna smiled the warmest smile yet. “Thank you for putting my mind at rest Jarin, I’ve missed having you around.”
"Well hopefully I'll be around awhile" he smiled back at her.
“I’m glad” T’Lanna offered a sweet smile. “Would you..like to have dinner with us tomorrow?” She motioned to Jayce. “Jayce likes you.” What she didn’t say was she liked Jarin more than a little.
"I like to eat" Jarin said with a smile and looked over at Jayce.
“Then dinner it is!” T’Lanna smiled warmly. “How’s does 1900 hours sound?”
"Sounds good to me" he gave his crooked smile to the woman who had become his friend.
“Wonderful” T’Lanna smiled looking back at Jayce. “After I lost my father I never thought anything would be the same again. Ryan still has me wearing this.” She lifted her hair to reveal her inhibitor. “After my mental outburst my abilities became hard to control. I’ve got more in the way of control now, but Ryan thinks it’s best to keep this on to help for now. Given what I did to people it’s for the best.”
"Maybe with a little research and work" he shrugged and offered her a smile. He didn't have any answers now, but would work to help T'Lanna however he could.
T’Lanna nodded. “I plan to ask Soral to help me remaster my abilities, he’s been a mentor, and friend ever since I came onboard.” She smiled turning to look at Jayce who was settling down nicely. “Looks like Jayce is starting to settle down.”
"Yes it looks that way" Jarin smiled at T'Lanna who was focusing on her baby boy.
T’Lanna looked back at Jarin offering a warmer smile. “I think we might head home, I feel better now you’ve reassured me.” She stepped closer kissing Jarin on the cheek. “Thank you Jarin, I’ll see you tomorrow evening.”
Jarin blushed slightly "see you then."
T’Lanna nodded and gently lifted her son who was finally starting to drift off into a peaceful sleep. “Until tomorrow.”
